We ended up making the connector from a special alloy which Kevin suggested, called Stressproof (or rather we used the Stressproof equivalent 1144 steel) which has a yield strength of about 3 times that of ordinary A36 steel, but is never-the-less easily machinable (unlike other high-strength steels such as other Alloy Steels (e.g. 4340 (chromoly) Normalized Alloy Steel)
